Why do I suspect the responses to this article would not be so positive if the author were white? What if his name were something like, say, Bruce Levenson? As a society, the US remains unable to tolerate any negative commentary about a minority community - even something as rigorous and fact-based as this - unless it comes from the community itself. This is neither helpful nor fair.
"Will the millennials come back to community?" I'm still wondering when the Republicans will come back to community. That used to be their bailiwick.
“There is no nice way of saying it,” Mrs. Engelman said. “Our community protects molesters. Other than that, we are wonderful.” Sorry, not true. The community may be wonderful in some ways, but it is not wonderful in many others - this is but one example, a major and tragic example or the hubris of thinking you (or the Rebbe) know all and are above secular law. Does the rabbincal court have the right to stone someone today? I hope you would agree they do not. What would you do if a woman was raped? How about when someone is murdered? Like it or not, for major crimes - of which child molestation is certainly one and there is nothing in the torah which would let you say it is not, you have to use the legal system of the world we live in. You cannot have it both ways.To shun someone, spit on them, do anything but support them, after they report child molestation says an awful lot about the nature of the community.
Yes because the policies and programs of the Left have done so much to lift the Africa American Community.Keep on keeping on Leftists. You haven't quite destroyed the African American Community. But you're almost there!
It is about politics. It is about the good of the community. Morality and ethics are about the way individuals conduct themselves in their interactions with others - how we each reconcile our personal needs and desires with the obligations to respect others. Politics is about trying to support the life of the community as a whole.
To me, the only conclusion to reach about the people in the "community" who cover up the abuse and the people in the "community" who punish those who go to the authorities, is that these people are human misfits, some biologica/genetic/chromosomal abnormality. Where are the indictments?
Michael Brown's death is a horrible event. Does the African-American community in Ferguson take any responsibility for the choices it makes raising their children? Stop explaining away criminal behavior and stop embracing a victim mentality. Ferguson police completely screwed up. This poor kid is dead. The police are not the entire problem in the community. The African-American community needs to take responsibility, too, for the death of this poor kid. How did his community fail him? How does our society fail kids like this? We have a society that glorifies criminal behavior and violence. A society that encourages people not to grow up. We protect childish behavior, but we don’t protect children. No, it is not just the police. Once we all embrace vilifying the police, we are at the next step of social breakdown. Michael Brown’s community needs to accept how they failed this kid, too.
