This is unfortunately the way this administration operates. They take a wait and see attitude until things become a crisis. (i.e.. Syria, ISIS, Ukraine, Iran) Finally, some governors attempt to be proactive to try and protect the people of their state and Obama is trying to get them to back down. Time for some actual leadership in Washington.

Contractors are used throughout the Federal Government for the very reason you state in your post: a race to the very bottom to keep wages as low as possible and abrogate all pensions and other benefits.

It's part of that wonderful free market politicians are always crowing about and it's also one of the ideas that come from lame brained politicians who go to Washington to "cut the pork" or "make government more efficient," or "reduce the size of government."

Those sound bytes are very popular with voters.

The sad part is the conservatives on the court aren't intellectually honest enough to admit they are as partisan as anybody else in Washington.

Much more damage has been done at the state level. That is going to be problematic in the future. I think that's been the strategy all along: a blocking and obstructing in Washington, with an accompanying noise campaign to obscure what's happening in the red-controlled states across the nation. At the same time the deliberate blocking of judges insures that legal action is futile.

Snowden is less of a traitor than his superiors who lied before Congress and spied on their Senate Intelligence Committee overseers but who, somehow, still have their jobs rather than cells in a Federal prison.

As for Mr. McCain, I won't be mourning his death in the least. I will, however, be pondering the extent to which the blatant hypocrisy of some of our leaders in Washington may have led him to Syria. I've felt for some time that the overreaction to 9/11, the lies behind the wars and the Obama-led drone war may have unintended consequences. Mr. McCain may be one of those unintended consequences.

It is helpful that the Times has documented yet another facet of the corrupt state of affairs in Washington. Perhaps if the news media covering this influence-peddling cesspool will now take the time to report, in every relevant article written about the goings-on in the Capitol, the source of funding for reports, policy statements and the like from these purportedly objective sources, we can get a better glimpse of the presence of what I would call "manufactured thought."
